Completely restored 1961 Serro Scotty Canned Ham Vintage Travel Trailer, 975Lbs!

Summary:
Used 1961
Location:
Portland, OR
Description:

READY FOR SPRING ADVENTURE IN STYLE!!John Serro started Serro Scotty in late 1955 and the company continues to make trailers today. It’s a small thing but 1961 was the ONLY year that Serro sported rear wings before being challenged by Shasta to cease and desist. Not very many were made and of course fewer have survived after 60 years.Fun fact. The rear “wings” were the cutout material from the wheel well! Stunning all Birch interiorAll new vintage material used for matching upholstery, curtains etc.Unblemished polished aircraft aluminum with only a couple barely perceptible indents from thrown road pebbles. I will have this Serro detailed and polished to a mirror shine before pickup. She is slightly dulled from being stored the past 5 years. Can be towed by virtually any car out there. The aluminum and birch construction is extremely light weight at only 975 lbs. Thats it! 975 lbs! We have towed it easily many times around the country. It is aerodynamic and handles well in cross wind which is a consideration for smaller vehicles. We traveled up and down mountain passes towing this Scotty with our Mini, a 2.0 Subaru Forrester and a couple other 100 horsepower, 4 cylinder compact cars with no struggle or anxious moments whatsoever. Because it weighs so little this Scotty can be maneuvered around on flat ground or in your garage quite easily with the trailer dolly. After you buy a camp trailer you will truly appreciate this. This Scotty restoration began as a solid all original Serro project with a non-rusted galvanized frame 15 years ago. Completely dismantled, inventoried and all wood was replaced with marine grade and new birch. No rot, warps or leaks anywhere. Period. The carpentry craftsmen team who finished at great expense one year later made sure of that. Since that time it has always been garaged when not in use.FeaturesThe twin sized bed slides back to become a couch. There is a reading light above the bed. Two adults fit comfortably. The dining table also folds down to become a smaller bed for a couple kids, dogs or a grown up. It has a two burner propane stove, an Ice box and a small sink. Water flows either via hand pump from the new 20 gallon water tank or from the faucet if you are hooked up to a water source. The original propane light was retained and has been converted internally to a 12 volt light above the table. The purchase cost and renovation on our trailer was substantially more than our hoped for selling price which is ok as we have had a great time over the years. I might add that the reason so many older collectable campers are listed in pretty bad shape yet with collector prices is that unless you do it yourself and it IS a ton of work, it costs a small fortune to rebuild one and people just give up. This one is completely done! It’s ready to go camping right now. It’s beautiful. It needs absolutely nothing.Comparable modern 13 foot trailers are not just heavier, averaging 2000 lbs, but weigh heavier on the checkbook as well. Even an extreme lightweight 13 footer like the Jayco Micro Featherweight 12SRK weighs 1600 lbs and also costs 22 grand. They are very nice but a vintage Scotty, in my opinion, is more desirable.Anyway, today’s typical camp trailers are made of steel and heavy molded fiberglass vs. aluminum/birch. This makes a big difference when towing using a smaller 4 cylinder car and are considerations.Only selling because we have a diesel truck and a larger camper. We’ve held on to this Scotty but we also sold our beater Subaru tow vehicle and simply don’t need two campers. Our new camper would really like to go in the garage where our Scotty trailer has been sitting waiting for a new home. That said It’s going to heartbreaking to see her go. There are many Canned Ham clubs as well as communities dedicated just for Serros. https://www.nationalserroscotty.org/rebuilds/hastings/index.html We do love this rare and wonderful Scotty and am absolutely sure you will too!
